Fractals are the mathematics which underpin nature. Here on the left is a photograph of a Galaxy.  On the right is a Fractal, drawn mathematically based on a simple self-repeating equation, made possible by high level computing.

Order in Chaos

This animation below is based on a fractal equation too.  It shows a random process that creates an intricate, defined structure:

It's created through the following simple steps:

• First, arrange 3 spots to form the corners of a triangle.
• Second, chose a starting point anywhere within this region and plot a point
• Next, move half the distance from that point to any of the 3 vertex points, chosen randomly, and plot a point
  
• Repeat the previous step

No matter where you begin or in what sequence you choose the vertices, the same image will always result.
